Unlike many people, I can’t remember the first time I realized I needed glasses, but I do remember the feelings associated with the realization.

Dread. Frustration. Confusion.

Sure, they may not have been necessarily felt in that order, but the point is that there were a grand total of zero positive feelings felt as a result of learning that my vision was gradually getting worse. The fact that I was the last one in my family of my five to get glasses really rubbed the realization in, too. For my first 21 years of life, I was the picture of eye health, growing up playing baseball, basketball, and my fair share of Nintendo 64, with no vision-related issues whatsoever (though skill-related issues were a different story). Right around the age of 18, I was convinced there was no way I would ever need glasses like the rest of my fuzzy-sighted family members. That my impeccable vision health track would remain flawless forever, despite a family history of bad vision diluting the gene pool, was my firm conviction.

What’s that thing they say about teenagers thinking they’re invincible?

A visit to the Costco optometrist and a few hundred dollars later (thank you mom and Randy Jackson signature specs), I was ready to take on the world with a new perspective in both the literal and figurative sense. After what I’ve learned about eye health supplements, Lutein, nootropics, and vision health in general, I wish I would have started doing this much sooner.

Now please allow me to drop some of that knowledge on you.

How to Maintain Your Eye Health

As your main window to the world around you, your eyes are one of the most important parts of your body, and taking care of them should be one of the most important parts of your routine. The older you get, the more susceptible your eyes are to age-related diseases like cataracts and macular degeneration, and the more crucial it is for you to properly care for your nose’s ocular neighbors. Without further ado, let’s go over some tips as to just how you can do so.

Get your eyes examined every two to four years.

There’s a very strong chance you’re not an optometrist or an ophthalmologist (given that you’re reading this article), meaning you may not know what to look for regarding signs of present and future eye issues, which your doctor could find while examining your eyes. (Heck, even if you are an eye doctor, you know as well as I do that one simply can’t self-examine as well as they can examine patients.) Having your eyes examined regularly could even save your life from chronic diseases like cancer. Go get checked, people!

Protect your eyes from the sun.

Sunglasses serve a much more practical purpose than making you look cool. They shield your eyes from harmful UV rays, which can increase the risk of cataracts and other eye-related diseases. Whether it’s hot outside or not, you should always wear sunglasses or a wide-brimmed hat while you’re out and about, especially during the middle of the day when the sun is shining its brightest. I should mention here that sunlight, like blue light, breaks down your macula.  A good lutein can actually slow down that process!

Eat a healthy diet.

This one is kind of a no-brainer and is something you should already be doing, but just in case you’re not currently eating a diet rich in fruits, veggies (leafy greens, specifically), fish, and nuts to benefit your eyes, I figured I would mention that you probably should.

Don’t smoke, and limit your alcohol intake.

Again, a no-brainer for much more than your eyes. Alcohol and tobacco can increase the risk of macular degeneration and cataracts.

Give your eyes a break.

Just like literally every other muscle in your body, your eyes need breaks from time to time. If your job or favorite hobby requires staring at a screen for hours on end, make sure you look away from the screen often to reduce eye strain and fatigue.
